Soak Up Some Culture in Antalya's Old Town

Antalya is a city that is difficult not to fall in love with. Its beauty enchanted ancient authors, explorers and travellers that visited the city were stunned by its charms. On the one hand, Antalya is currently a metropolis with the population of over a million inhabitants, but on the other hand it is also increasingly popular tourist resort with beautiful beaches and luxury hotels.

What's more, in the heart of the city there is a charming historical district. What will Antalya be for you? Certainly, it is a city worth a visit and checking if it actually is "the most beautiful place on earth."

Frequently repeated and most well-known version of the history of Antalya states that the city was founded in the Hellenistic period, around 150 BCE, by Attalos II, king of Pergamon. The city was then called Attalia, reflecting its founder's name. Over time this word was distorted and now exists as Antalya. Until the 50s of the 20th century, the word Antalya was understood as only one part of today's city, that being its oldest district, known as (Kaleiçi) Old Town.

Side

Side, situated halfway between Antalya and Alanya, is not only a popular resort on the Mediterranean coast but also a magnificently preserved ancient city. In ancient times it flourished in the slave trade, which contributed to the wealth and power of this settlement. Even if you are not beach bunnies, do not miss out Side as located on the ruins from the Hellenistic and Roman times are a huge tourist attraction, and the local museum, operating in former Roman baths, has many interesting exhibits.

Aspendos

The greco-roman remains of Aspendos ancient city are situated in Pamphylia, approximately 40 km east of Antalya, on the Eurymedon river. The city was 16 km away from the Mediterranean coast. The main reason for most of the tourists to visit Aspendos is its Roman theatre which is the best preserved structure of its kind in the world. The additional attraction of Aspendos lies in the possibility of participation in many artistic events organised in the theatre.

However, Aspendos is more than just a theatre, there are also the ruins of many other structures, including a stadium, a basilica and an agora. Moreover, the local aqueduct is well-preserved. Marvel at the Famous Sculptures of Perge

Perge, located 19 km east of Antalya, used to be one of the most important cities of ancient Pamphylia.

Its most notable son was Apollonius, a mathematician and an astronomer who who gave the ellipse, the parabola, and the hyperbola the names by which we know them. In ancient times, Perge was also renowned as a sanctuary dedicated to the goddess Artemis whose temple stood on a hill outside the town. Unfortunately, despite intensive searching, researchers have so far failed to find any traces of this once magnificent building.

According to Greek mythology the legendary origins of Perge date back to the 13th century BC, when Greek immigrants arrived to Pamphylia, traversing Asia Minor after the Trojan War. The leaders of this movement were supposed to be three famous seers - Mopsos, Calchas and Amphilochus. The first two of them had been recognized as the founders of Perge.
